“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” said George Santayana—and our memories are littered with examples: from Hitler repeating Napoleon’s mistake in invading Russia, to the U.S. repeating France’s mistake in Vietnam and then repeating Russia’s mistake in Afghanistan. Each time, the consequences of the ignorance of history are compounded by hubris; thinking that, somehow, it will be different for us.
