Multiple Systems Estimation and Human Trafficking

Multiple Systems Estimation (MSE) is a statistical method that uses overlap between samples to make inferences about the size of a larger population. It was first applied in the context of human rights by Patrick Ball to estimate the number of civilians killed in Guatemala during armed conflict between 1960 and 1996 (Ball, et al. 1999). This ultimately led to the trial and (brief) conviction of General Rios Montt on charges of crimes against humanity, including genocide (Ball and Price. 2018).
