Baseball Playoffs Are a Coin Toss

The success of the underdog St. Louis Cardinals this past October has many people talking about the inherent randomness of the playoffs in major league baseball. This topic inspired one of the earliest known statistical analyses of baseball by Frederick Mosteller in his 1952 article, “The World Series Competition,” published in the Journal of the American Statistical Association.
