In previous columns, I have mentioned the National Puzzlers’ League (NPL), an organization founded in 1883 for lovers of word puzzles and dedicated to raising the standard of puzzling to a higher intellectual level. Cryptic crossword puzzles, the focus of my CHANCE puzzles, are just one type of word puzzle created and solved by NPL members. In this and future issues, I will introduce you to the dizzying array of other puzzle types.
