I do not recall where I first heard the wonderful statement, “If you can only see one possible way to interpret the data, then you are probably wrong,” but the same is true for solving cryptic crossword clues. The surface reading is sometimes so enticing that it is hard to get off that track and onto one that leads to the correct answer.
