Transforming Medical Cucumbers into Sunbeams
Suppose we learned that four Boeing 737 MAX planes, each of which was carrying 172 passengers and a crew of eight, have all crashed in a single day, killing all aboard. It would justifiably be considered one of the worst air catastrophes of all time. Undoubtedly, that model of airplane would be hauled out of service and Boeing’s stock price would fall through the floor. Now suppose no such action was taken and the same thing happened again the next day—indeed, it kept happening every day for a year, resulting in more than 250,000 deaths. There is no doubt that the consequences for Boeing, the various airlines, the FAA, and anyone having to do with air safety would be profound.
