When Did History Occur?
Before answering the question “When did history occur?,” it is necessary to answer the question “What is history?”
When I taught introductory statistics, I would show my classes Charles Braverman’s “An American Time Capsule,” a film with more than 1,300 still images that condenses 200 years of American history into 3 minutes. It first appeared on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1968. Most of the images are of war or violence. Is that the nature of American history? How do you obtain a random or representative sample of history?
