Can People Distinguish Pâté from Dog Food?

The diet of domestic dogs in most of the world consists of scraps, the byproducts of human food preparation and consumption. Indeed, as noted by J. W. S. Bradshaw in the 1991 Proceedings of the Nutrition Society article “Sensory and Experiential Factors in the Design of Foods for Domestic Dogs and Cats (PDF),” the close overlap between the diet of Canis familiaris and Homo sapiens may have been crucial for its evolution as a human companion species.
