Every father must come to grips with the fact that his sons will eventually defeat him in virtually every head-to-head competition they embark upon, a prime example being on the basketball court when Junior’s a teenager. For me, this looming defeat came far too suddenly and far too early when I was playing my five-year-old in the strategy game Battleship. I had erroneously assumed that I, having a head start of decades, would always have the upper hand in games of the mind, so this unexpected defeat was nearly too much to handle.
