Privacy Protection for the European Census Hub

In this column, Anne-Sophie Charest reports on her attendance at a workshop on the privacy protection of European census data to be released on the Census Hub. We learn about statistical disclosure limitation (SDL) practices on the other side of the Atlantic, explore the difficulties with protecting data on the hub, and reflect on questions regarding the future of SDL methods.

Each member state of the European Union (EU) is responsible for conducting periodic censuses and disseminating the results. There also exists a statistical office of the European Union, named Eurostat, situated in Luxembourg. The task of Eurostat is to “provide the European Union with statistics at European level that enable comparisons between countries and regions.” A recent project in this direction is the Census Hub, a framework for the dissemination of detailed census data for all EU member states.
