ASA President’s Task Force Statement on Statistical Significance and Replicability
Introduction
The value of hypothesis testing, and the frequent misinterpretation of p-values as a cornerstone of statistical methodology, continues to be debated. In response, the president of the American Statistical Association (ASA) convened a task force in 2019 to write a succinct statement about the use of statistical methods in scientific studies, specifically hypothesis tests and p-values, and their connection to replicability. The task force statement is reprinted here.
Editor’s note: The task force statement was published in The Annals of Applied Statistics in September 2021. It is reprinted here with permission from the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.
