Teaching Courses Focused on Social Good
In recent years, the field of statistics has had an increasing role in helping to understand current and historical societal phenomena, from the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines to election forecasting to understanding trends in policing and the criminal justice system in the United States. Therefore, it is important for students to be equipped with skills to think critically and ask questions as they engage with data and statistics in the world around them. In fact, the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) recommend that introductory courses “integrate real data with context and purpose.”
