Traditionally, there were two basic ways to rid yourself of unwanted or unneeded life insurance policies: die or let the policy lapse. For some policies—permanent and whole life—you could force the insurance company to pay out its current cash value. However, a third option emerged in the 1980s known as a viatical settlement.
