Healthy People 2010: Measuring Disparities in Health

Healthy People 2010 (HP2010), led by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is a national initiative to promote health and prevent disease. Through a national consensus-building process from 1997 to 1999, specific objectives for improving the health of the nation were identified. This process involved participants from 350 national membership organizations; 250 state health agencies; and numerous professionals at local, state, and national meetings. Baseline values for the objectives were established and specific targets were set for improvements to be achieved by 2010. Similar initiatives set objectives for 1990 and 2000. A new set of objectives for 2020 is being developed.
