As applying statistical analysis to sports data becomes more and more popular, attracting the interest of managers, coaches, athletes, and fans, scientific research in this field is growing, with new methodologies being developed and new application contexts explored. Results are presented in an increasing number of books and scientific papers published in both specialized journals and special issues devoted to particular subjects. According to Google Trends, the search queries volume in Google Web Search for the keywords “Sports Data Science” has steadily grown in the last 12 years (Figure 1).
