An Interview with Mine Çetinkaya-Rundel

Mine Çetinkaya-Rundel is the recipient of the 2016 ASA Waller Education Award, which honors individuals for innovation in the instruction of elementary statistics. We interviewed Mine about her teaching philosophy and practice.

Dalene Stangl: What is your overarching teaching philosophy?

Mine Çetinkaya-Rundel: Organization and clarity are of utmost importance to me when designing a course. I want my students to be challenged by the content of my course, but not its logistics. I also believe very strongly in welcoming and open communication channels. I invite my students to visit me during office hours early in the semester, even if they don’t have a specific question. I find that the one-on-one interaction in that setting makes it easier for students to come to me later with questions.
