Big Data Hits the Big Time

On March 29, 2012, the Obama administration announced the Big Data Research and Development Initiative. Suddenly, everyone was talking about what we statisticians have known for years: Big Data is important, interesting, and everywhere!

As part of the initiative, federal agencies—including the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Energy (DOE), and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)—committed millions of dollars of additional funds to Big Data projects.
